Niko made his first official joke last week. It went something like this:
Me: Oo look, here's a cow! What sound does a cow make?
Niko: Mooooo!
Me: Right! And a horse says?
Niko: Neeeeee!
Me: Totally! And what about this pig?
Niko (laughing and exaggerated): HEL-LOOO!?
Cracking up on both ends ensues.
You guys, having a toddler is a parent's amazing reward for dealing with a sleepless baby. Our toddler, by the way, has been sleeping through the night (more or less) for 3 weeks now. Better late than never. Now life is amazing and we have everything we ever asked for (except money- but whatever). I am feeling so grateful these days.

Date: 2012-03-06 04:15 pm (UTC)I am soooo happy to hear this. For you, and also selfishly for me. Your words about endless sleepless nights have been echoing around in my (fried, sleep-deprived) brain for a long time now. Julian is 13 months now and I don't think he has slept more than 2 hours in a row much more than a handful of times since he turned 6 months. It has been rough. And amazing. But the not sleeping part has been.... rough.
I often feel like I am sitting at an afterhours party by the time breakfast rolls around. I can't believe I ever used to stay awake ON PURPOSE.
Niko's joke = <3

Date: 2012-03-06 04:27 pm (UTC)Sleep got better around 18 months. At 20 months, he was sleeping until 5, and then throwing temper tantrums after we did a 5am nurse. Finally I started sending Buster in at 5 with an alarm on his iphone. He explained that they weren't getting up until the 7am alarm went off. The first morning he screamed, the second morning he fake cried, the third morning he sat quietly, and the fourth morning he rolled over and went back to sleep. So the whole CIO thing did work, but we felt better about it because his papa was with him the whole time, gently explaining things. Now he still wakes at 5 and calls for us. One of us goes in and lays down for the last stretch, which is totally fine with us since we like cuddling, anyway!
Anyhow, the story is different for everyone I'm sure. But it DOES get better one way or another. You will figure it out. And, btw, our marriage is back to it's usual good spirits. Not sleeping made good spirits much more difficult, to say the least.

ben is such a receptive little bugger (like his dad). he has recently started giving back via sign and I cry (almost) every time we're communicating. I'm definitely in that "babies are super adorable" boat, but really, i've always wanted this kid who can give back more than shit, puke and an occasional questionable smile.
