The State of Niko

The state of Niko is a pretty good one, lately. Except for sleep, really, which I am thinking of as a long term project.
His brain is exploding these days~ he's really figuring out how to communicate with all the silly adults he lives with. He started signing for milk right around Christmas, or at least that's when I finally noticed it. Who knows how long he's been trying to get that one through to me! It was pointed out by a friend in SoCal who has two older kids of her own. She asked, "Is he signing for milk?" and we said, "Oh no. He does that with his hand all the time."
Then, later, he looked me dead in the eye and made the sign that "he does all the time" and I realized that it was me who hadn't been listening! I was so excited and a little embarrassed that I didn't notice it for who knows how long.
He started signaling for more yesterday. Or at least... I noticed that he started signaling for more. He was SO PROUD when I knew what he wanted. As if to say, "This silly mom of mine is finally GETTING me."
Then? Today I was unsure if he was understanding my potty signals. I'm not really consistent with the whole EC thing. I just put him on the potty after he takes a nap and he eventually pees. It's a no-brainer, really. Anyhow I wasn't sure if he got what I was asking so, when I was changing him today and saw that his diaper was dry, I signaled to him to pee and he grinned and did so. Again, he was SO PROUD. We both had a giggle fit.
He's stoked to play quietly and figure out how wheels work. Stacking the circles on the rod (or, uh, NOT) can be frustrating. Often he puts the circle blocks on the floor and tries to put the pole pedestal on top of the circles. Ha. That's one way to try! He's also very mystified by how the hell the iPad piano works. He constantly lifts it up to look underneath. It's really quite charming!
Much easier to figure out than the whole rings on a pole thing is the big nesting pasta pots and steamers! He'll entertain himself for a super long time (as far as a 7.5 month old is concerned) standing in his Johnny Jump Up and playing with the nesting pots. I get extra points if I play the album by The Like that came out last summer while he does this, since that is THE album to have a dance party to if you're Niko!
His crawl is still a big old army crawl with a push off from his feet, and he's gotten pretty speedy with it when he wants to be (considering that he's still super mellow, he doesn't want to be speedy very often). He realizes that actual crawling involves lifting up your hands and moving on your knees, but every time he tries to figure it out and can't, he gives up and goes back to his weird inch worm thing to get to what he wants. I suspect he'll figure the whole thing out very soon, because he's really hot to pull himself up to standing, which scares me.
Food is still... eh. He doesn't like being spoon fed very much at all, so I give him bits of stuff to gnaw on. It's hard to tell how much he actually eats v/s how much lands on the floor. He loves a pickle. He loves soft carrots. He did eat a whole half avocado when we were in CA, which was really stand-out. Mostly, though, dude is still just a boob man, and that's just fine with me. I'm embracing every moment of how easy that part is!
